DEHYDRATION WHAT TO DO ABOUT DEHYDRATION
Dehydration can cause tiredness, weakness, and dizziness without
physical activity. Everything you need to know about it from our MD Thordis
Berger ...
Dehydration- The Symptoms and What To Do About It
Water is our main and most important nutrient. Water is essential
for both organ function and digestion. Up to 60% of our body weight is made up
of water, and it only takes 1-2% water loss to cause Dehydration.
Although there is no clear definition, Dehydration is
typically defined as the disruption of the body's water balance due to loss of
fluids, inadequate hydration, and a combination of both.
Dehydration is the root cause of many common health
conditions, such as constipation, fainting, urinary tract infection, pressure
sores, malnutrition, incontinence, and confusion.
Dehydration can also lead to life-threatening illnesses,
such as acute kidney injury, heart disease, and venous thromboembolism.
Depending on the relationship between the loss of sodium and
water, Dehydration can also be classified as isotonic (loss in equal parts
between sodium and water - example: diarrhea), hypertonic (excess water loss
compared to sodium - model: fever), or hypertonic (excess sodium loss in the
Compared to water example: overdose of laxatives). (EFSA 2010)
Since there is no single diagnostic parameter for this, one
should generally stick to a pattern of various indicators or signs to recognize
a lack of fluid in summer. If you suspect someone is dehydrated, call a doctor
right away.
Symptoms of Dehydration are:
·
fatigue
·
weakness
·
Loss of appetite
·
Dry mouth and swollen tongue
·
Racing heart
·
Confusion and dizziness
·
Dark-colored urine
Infants and kids are more prone to dehydration than adults
because their bodies are smaller and have a higher water and electrolyte
revenue. The elderly and sick are also at increased risk of Dehydration in
summer.
Extreme weather conditions such as the heat during summertime
also increase dehydration risk. Most people think that the only way to
dehydrate is to exhaust yourself. However, this is not the case. Just sweating
on a hot day without engaging in any strenuous activity can lead to Dehydration.
Let's say you are outside by the pool and not drinking enough fluids.
Exhaustion from the heat causes you to lose a lot of fluids.
The solution to this is to drink plenty of fluids every day
and even more when it's hot outside and when we're exercising. Make sure you
drink aquatic even if you think it isn't essential. The drink that you prefer
to drink at outdoor events - beer - is unfortunately not a good alternative.
Alcohol has a diuretic effect and causes fluid loss.
Eat fruits and vegetables that contain water. Fresh products
such as watermelons, lettuce, oranges, and apples provide you with the optimal
liquid you need.
Choose the right clothes. Light clothing reflects the heat
in the summer months. Light, loose clothing allows better air circulation and
means that sweat can evaporate more easily all year round. When exercising
outside, wear layers of your clothing so you can take off layers as needed in
case you get too warm.
In short, the vast majority of cases of Dehydration,
especially in summer, can be avoided simply by using common sense.
